NEW BRITAIN - Bessie (Rose) Stewart, 91, of New Britain, widow of Charles Stewart, died Monday April 4, 2016. Born in Arrington, Virginia, daughter of the late Stuart and Muriel (Walker) Rose, she was employed at Emhart for 34 years. She was a member of Spottswood A.M.E. Zion Church for over sixty years where she served in many capacities including Class Leader, Deaconess, President of the Home Mission Board, Acolytes Supervisor, Gospel Choir member, and a senior usher. She also was a member of the NAACP, The Every Women’s Club, and Naomi Chapter 9 O.E.S. Her community service included working for the American Heart & Lung Association, and serving as chair person for the McKinley Williams Scholarship Fund. She is survived by her daughter, Michele Stewart-Copes, husband Aelix “Lex” Copes of New Britain, a brother Larnell Rose, wife Geneva of Amherst, Virginia, two grandchildren Tonya Wrice Smith, husband Donnie Smith of North Carolina, and Rashida Graham, three great-grandchildren Donnie Smith II, Deja Michele Smith and Ginger Graham and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by eight siblings. Funeral service will be held on Monday, April 11, 2016 at 12 noon at Spottswood A.M.E. Zion Church, 25 Crestwood Lane, New Britain. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery, New Britain. Calling hours are from 10:00 to 12:00 noon at the church. Naomi Chapter 9 O.E.S. will hold a service during the calling hours.
