Ruth Christensen, born January 16, 1921 died May 19, 2016, at the age of 95 in the warmth and comfort of her Newington home enveloped by the love of her family. Ruth was the daughter of Axel and Edla Hanson of Rocky Hill, Connecticut. She was predeceased 2010 by her beloved husband of 68 years, Andrew H. Christensen known to all as Herbie, and was also predeceased by her brother Albert, and sisters, Sig, Flo and Vera. Ruth is survived by two sons, Bob and his wife Dee of Kill Devil Hills, NC, and Tom and his fiancée Pam of Middletown, a loving extended family of nieces and nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews and great-grandchildren, and her dear friend Charlotte who was more than a neighbor for so many years. She also leaves her second family of friends at the United Methodist Church in Newington. Known by the fruits of her labor, Ruth made beautiful crocheted baby blankets which she gave to new born children both in and outside of her family. If you knew Ruth, you probably received a hand towel with a crocheted top for your kitchen. She was an avid baker, who rose early each Sunday to make her favorite cookie or sweets for her Church family. Affectionately called the energizer bunny, she maintained her own home and managed her own finances through her 95th year. Ruth will be remembered by all for her love of conversation. She always had a story to share or was a good listener if you had news of your own. She had a quick wit and twinkle in her eye. A service to celebrate Ruth’s remarkable life will be held at United Methodist Church, 401 New Britain Avenue, Newington where Ruth was a longtime member. Calling hours will be Tuesday (May 24, 2026) from 10-11am at the church, followed by an 11am service. Ruth will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Hartford. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the United Methodist Church, 401 New Britain Avenue, Newington, CT 06111, The Lions Low Vision Center, P.O. Box 4035, Windsor Locks, CT 06096-4035, or the NC Lions VIP Fishing Tournament, P.O. Box 140, Columbia, NC 27925.
